How to tie your silk scarf over your shoulders with a clever button trick

This styling trick gives your scarf a whole new use.

Wearing a silk scarf over the shoulders isn't new, but this way of tying it is. Instead of tying a knot or relying on the fabric to stay in place, you let the buttons and buttonholes of your shirt or blouse do the work. The result is a tie that holds all day, without slipping, adding bulk, or needing adjustment.

What do you need?

A silk scarf around 70x70 cm and a shirt, blouse or top with buttons down the front. The buttons are essential to this scarf styling, since the buttonholes act as the anchors.

Step-by-step guide

  1. Fold the scarf into a triangle: Lay the scarf flat and fold it diagonally so you get a large triangle. The long edge sits up towards the neck and the point hangs down towards the lower back.

  2. Place the scarf over your back: Place the longest edge along your upper back and shoulders. Bring the two ends forward, one on each side of the neck, down towards your chest.

  3. Pass one end through a buttonhole: Take one end and pass it through one of the shirt's top buttonholes, from the outside in. Then tie a small simple knot right at the end of the fabric, just like a stopper knot. The knot stops the end from sliding back through the hole and keeps the scarf in place.

  4. Cover the buttons with the other end: Take the other end of the fabric and lay it loosely over the buttons down the front. Button up your shirt as usual, with the fabric caught between button and buttonhole. Every button you fasten catches the fabric and holds it in place. The scarf becomes a natural part of the shirt.

  5. Hide the last bit of fabric: When the fabric is almost used up, tuck the last bit in between the buttonholes so it sits hidden inside the shirt. No loose fabric, just a clean, put-together look. If you prefer a more "undone but put together" look, you can leave the loose end showing.

Why this works

Most ways of wearing a scarf over the shoulders require either a brooch, a tight knot, or constant adjusting. This tie is anchored at both ends, one in the buttonhole and one under the buttons, which means the scarf actually stays in place. It falls naturally, covers the shoulders evenly, and moves with the body without losing its fit.

It's also a subtle but fashion-forward trick. From the outside, it just looks like the scarf happens to sit perfectly in place, which it does.

The scarf works best with

The technique works with most pieces that have buttons down the front. A classic white shirt gives a clean look like in the photo, while a linen shirt gives a more relaxed, summery feel. A striped or solid-coloured blouse with buttons works just as well, letting the scarf take focus while the garment provides structure. Avoid tops with hidden button plackets or zips, buttonholes are essential to this technique.

About the scarf

The scarf in the photo is ELOÉ N.01 Burgundy, a 70x70 cm silk scarf woven in 100% natural silk from Como, Italy. The deep burgundy shade and thin white edge make it just as suited to everyday wear as to special occasions, all year round.
